Introduction: We already have shown as preliminary results that patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCF-BCT) use a higher proportion of their cardiorespiratory capacity during activities of daily living (ADLs). However, comparison of physiological responses between NCF-BCQ and controls have not yet been investigated. Aim: To compare the metabolic and ventilatory demands during ADLs between adults with NCF-BCT and healthy subjects. Methods: 39 subjects (FEV1 61±26 %pred) and 20 healthy peers performed five ADLs: putting on socks, shoes, and vest; putting away different weights on a rack; sweeping a floor; carrying weight while walking (5Kg); and climbing stairs during a minute. Results: Patients reported higher dyspnea and fatigue than healthy subjects. | | VO2 (% max) | VO2 (% max) | VE (%MVV) | VE (%MVV) | || | ADL | NCF-BCT | Control | NCF-BCT | Control | | 1 | 43±19 ∗, 1 | 31±9 | 19.5⌊14-26⌋∗,1 | 8⌊6.5-12⌋ | | 2 | 59±24∗, 2 | 39±13 | 24.7⌊18-33⌋∗,2 | 10⌊7.7-13.6⌋ | | 3 | 91±32∗, 3 | 43±15 | 28.0⌊19-38⌋∗,3 | 11⌊9.5-14⌋ | | 4 | 91±32 ∗ | 58±15 | 34.0⌊24-45⌋∗,4 | 13.7⌊17.8-11.8⌋ | | 5 | 102±28 ∗ | 84±20 | 36.0⌊27-47⌋∗ | 20⌊26-15⌋ | * VO2: oxygen uptake in percentage of the maximum achieved in the cardiopulmonary exercise test, VE: ventilation in percentage of the maximum voluntary ventilation. ∗ p |
