In 1908 Lautier, 1 and independently Moro, 2 conceived the idea of using tuberculin for testing by placing the test material on the skin without disrupting its structure. The term percutaneous was introduced to designate this method of testing the effect of materials on the skin, in contrast with von Pirquet's method and other intracutaneous and subcutaneous methods which involve traumatization of the skin. The method of percutaneous testing with tuberculin was studied and modified in various ways by Kasahara, Wegerer, Blumenau, Habetin and Malmberg and Fromm. 3 In 1933 a percutaneous tuberculin test was introduced in this country by Grozin 4 ; he suggested the name "tuberculin patch test." Vollmer 5 in 1937 improved the method by saturating filter paper with undiluted tuberculin and placing it on adhesive tape.
