The authors present the forensic identification investigations after the aircrash of the Airbus A320 upon the Mount Sainte-Odile (3400 feet), France. The airbus, non equipped with a ground proximity warning system and coming from Lyon airport (take off: 6.30 pm) with 96 occupants including the crew, was requested to delay its landing approach by flying over the mountains when it disappeared from the central tower radar at 7.30 pm. Four hours later the impact point was located at a wooded area close to the Mount Sainte-Odile and 30 km away from the Strasbourg airport. 85 fatalities and 9 survivors were found on the arrival of the rescue squads. The aircraft was completely fragmented with the cockpit and the tail separated. The bodies were dispersed all around the wreckage but no relation could be found between the situation of the bodies and the seats occupied by the victims during the flight. In fact, in domestic flights, there is no seat reservation. Most of the carbonized bodies were found in the region where the fuselage had caught fire and was destroyed. |
