This chapter covers the fundamental principles and uses of magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) based hybrid materials in the biomedical field. Factors such as size, surface effect, and types of metallic ion precursors that dictate the magnetic properties of MNPs are discussed. The principles and advances in bioinspired physical and chemical methods for the synthesis of MNPs are reviewed. Additionally, the effect of the synthetic approaches on the structure and magnetic properties of MNPs are discussed. Various chemical modifications and ligand attachments onto the surface of MNPs that help to improve nanoparticle properties, such as hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, porosity, and targeting ability, are outlined. These modifications enhance the versatility of MNPs for various biomedical applications. This chapter focuses on advances in the use of MNPs in the medical and diagnostic industries. Finally, future trends and research directions for these applications are summarized. |
