Popis: | Observations were conducted to determine rheotaxic behavior in Otocinclus sp. (Loricariidae). Rheotaxis in Otocinclus sp. (standard length 2.29–3.34 cm) occurs in three stages; (i) resting at zero water velocity; (ii) adhesion when water velocities are increased to about 10 cm s−1; and (iii) clamped position when slipping occurs (between 19 and 35 cm s−1). Rheotaxis also occurred on rougher surfaces without displacement for water velocities up to 70 cm s−1. Slipping velocities are maximized by morphological and behavioral characteristics that allow for the maintenance of position in rapidly moving water. |
