SUMMARY The results of surgery in the anorectal region depend on its effects on the motor, sensory and anatomical factors subserving anal continence, with a correspondingly greater percentage of defects in anal control occurring as an increasing number of factors are impaired by the operation. The identification of factors involved in continence has led to surgical procedures being designed with the aim of avoiding damage to them consistent with successful treatment of the primary condition. A similar process has evolved in the preservation of sexual function when the rectum has to be resected for non-malignant disease. |
