Popis: In rock mechanics, the problem of floor failure of a coal seam must be solved for mining coal above a confined aquifer. In this study, we aim to build an analytical mechanical model of coal-seam-floor failure based on plasticity theory and the Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion. Based on an analysis of the geological and hydrological conditions in the Chenghe mining area and factors affecting water inrush from the floor of the coal seam No. 5 coal, we introduce a failure coefficient ξ for the mass of floor rock of the coal seam. We monitor floor displacement and the depth of floor failure by using a displacement meter and drilling a peep hole, respectively, in working face No. 5206 of coal seam No. 5 of the inclined shaft of the Wangcun Coal Mine in the Chenghe mining area. The results indicate a maximum floor failure of 11.5 m deep immediately under the working face. A comparison of the results of calculations with those of the in situ measurements reveals a high anastomotic degree, which provides a technical reference for determining the effective confining bed thickness for mining under pressure. This approach is expected to increase the safety of the mining process at the Dongjiahe Coal Mine and other similar mines.
