Popis: Should you ask "What gap?" the answer is the gap between the publication of new chemical matter and its general availability for consultation in abstract and index form. This is the answer in principle, even if on analysis the problem proves more complex. Chemists would like to have their information on the day of publication, neatly translated into their mother tongue and packaged in quanta which differ from those of the physicist in being of infinitely variable size and content. With this illusory target in mind, no wonder many chemists manifest a spirit of discontent with traditional publications. In Chemical Abstracts Service, we are continually being asked what we are doing to "close the gap." The purpose of this article is to tell you what we are doing.
