Electron spin resonance studies, using spin probe correlation times, on the middle phase of three-phase micellar systems at optimal salinity show the development, upon standing, of a microviscosity gradient. This gradient does not appear when the system is not at optimal salinity. The existence of a middle phase is, therefore, not a sufficient condition for the gradient. The origin of the gradient is believed to be the facile interconversion of the water-continuous and the hydrocarbon-continuous middle phases at the critical point and is related to fluctuation phenomena. The observation of the microviscosity gradient is consistent with data from conductivity measurements. |
