Popis: The aim of this paper is to use the optimal control theory for the analytic design of multivariable discrete time regulators which has so far received minor attention in the literature even though in practice regulator design is often based on discrete time models and control laws are implemented in digital process computers. The multivariable regulator design problem is imbedded into the optimal control problem and the optimal state Pl-regulator is derived which is made suboptimal (output Pl-regulator) by imposing constraint in the feedback structure. The approximation is based on the singular value decomposition of the optimal closed loop system matrix and a weighted least squares solution is given. It is recommended to take weights equal to the eigenvalues of the Gram matrix formed from the optimal system matrix.
