The aim of this chapter is to understand the curiously suspended representation of 9/11 in Gerhard Richter’s painting September (2005). Starting in the present with German poet Thomas Kling’s lyrical exploration of the barely visible urban space of Manhattan after the attacks on the Twin Towers, the chapter then takes a historical turn in order to reconstruct a particular constellation which—in the mode of the sublime—combines a fashion of seeing with moral reflection and which lies at the heart of European representations of catastrophe. From here the way leads back to Richter who in September confronts the problem of blurred vision known from his early paintings with the moral implications of the (post-)sublime. |
