I used to live in Great Neck, a commuter suburb on Long Island, New York. This gave me ready access to open country there and to the metropolis of New York, only thirty-five minutes away. I was exposed not only to the museum and library facilities of the city, but also to old buildings, antiques, and family associations going back as far as the first quarter of the eighteenth century when one direct ancestor operated a tidewater grist mill which is still standing and, I should add, is on the National Register. |
