Hydrogen and deuterium absorption in LaNixMny

Popis: Absorption and desorption of H 2 (D 2 ) in LaNi x Mn y alloys of three different compositions: LaNi 4.5 Mn 0.09 , LaNi 5.19 Mn 0.39 and LaNi 6.37 Mn 0.33 were investigated. Pressure-composition isotherms and kinetic curves of corresponding reactions were obtained at 40, 80 and 100°C. It was found that the difference in equilibrium pressure between hydrogen and deuterium could hardly exceed 0.1 MPa in all cases studied. It is obviously not in favor of hydrogen-deuterium separation. However, the kinetic study showed that in LaNi 6.37 Mn 0.33 -H(D) systems the temperature influenced the rate of absorption in opposite directions for hydrogen and deuterium. For example, when temperature decreased the absorption of hydrogen sped up while that of deuterium slowed down. Thus, it is possible to extend the difference in rate of absorption between H 2 and D 2 by alternating the temperature. It is estimated that at 40°C this alloy absorbs hydrogen approximately 4.8 times as fast as it absorbs deuterium. It seems, therefore, prospective to utilize this isotope effect in H 2 -D 2 separation.
