Popis: This article offers the first critical study of Harriet Ward’s reportage of the Seventh Frontier War (1846‒47) for the United Service Magazine . It argues that Ward’s successful two-year stint as war reporter, carried out under the militaristic yet female authorial persona of an army wife, makes it imperative for us to radically revise our conception of the Victorian war correspondent as a staffed male reporter. It demonstrates that Victorian war correspondence was far more generically diverse than is currently recognized and that women writers like Ward used the slower pace of monthly magazines to create a form of war reportage in which delay itself signified accuracy, rigor, and depth. It also shows how army wives, when writing about their embattled lives on colonial frontiers, could participate in important and hitherto unnoted ways in the British imperial enterprise.
