Popis: | A study of the history of prices can serve a variety of useful purposes. Thus, the modest enquiry described below was originally intended to shed light on Danish distilling—an industry closely associated with the grain trade of former days and exerting much influence upon it. The somewhat specialised nature of this aim, however, is no bar to the results having some application to other sectors of the economy. The goal as originally conceived did of course limit the field of reference to some extent. It was farmers’ prices, particularly those applying to farmers’ transactions with the merchants of the towns, that chiefly interested the present writer. This meant that rural trade (landekobet) and the wholesale grain trade were not a central feature of the investigation. Nevertheless, the incompleteness of the source-data makes it impossible always to draw a sharp distinction between the various forms of trade.
