A series of experiments based upon a token economy was conducted with adolescent patients in a private psychiatric hospital. In an initial experiment, the experimental control of a point system over simple, personal care behaviors was demonstrated. In subsequent studies, procedures designed to control access to social reinforcement were shown to control patient behavior. Results suggest that in future research with complex social beahviors, component analysis should be considered to discriminate among the effects of various components of a token economy. |
