In 1951, the Austrian neurosurgeon Wilhelm Bischof described the new method of longitudinal myelotomy for the treatment of severe spasticity of the legs (Bischof 1951). His aim was to interrupt the spinal reflex arc between the anterior and posterior horns within the spinal cord. Bischof carried out the operation through a T-10 to T-12 laminectomy. The dura was opened and a bilateral longitudinal lateral incision was made, at the level of the L-1 to S-2 roots. In his second patient the lateral incision was made so deep that the knife cut the reflex arcs on both sides of the cord. Bilateral relief of spasticity was reported. |
