The video coding standards H.264, H.265, and H.266 were jointly developed by ISO/IEC MPEG and ITU-T VCEG (Video Coding Experts Group). The main objective of H.264 (aka. AVC) and H.265 (aka. HEVC) was to improve the coding efficiency so as to deal with the ever-increasing amount of video data due to the increases in both video resolution and frame rate, initially with the introduction of high definition (HD) and later ultra-high definition (UHD) video/TV. Lately, H.266 (aka. VVC) was developed to further address the above issues, as well as emerging applications of high dynamic range (HDR) video, \(360^\circ \) video, and others (e.g., panoramic video). In this chapter, we will study the principle techniques essential for the superior performance of these modern video coding standards. |
