Popis: A practical and reliable technique is essential for monitoring the tool wear and predicting the tool life in automated diamond turning processes. For the purpose of developing such technique, features of the cutting force are investigated, which are closely related to the tool wear. When turning coppers, the notch wear that causes a fracture of the diamond tool corner grows on the rake face as well as the growth of crater wear. The ratio of the thrust force to the principal force rises gradually as the face wear progresses, and rises extremely just as the tool corner is fractured. The dynamic component of the cutting force fluctuates randomly during the mirror-like surface finishing accompanied with the face wear. However, it changes into chaotic fluctuation by the occurrence of the chipping or fracture. The change from random to chaos in the dynamic component can be clearly known from the 1/fβ power spectrum of the cutting force. That is, the failure of the cutting edge makes the spectral exponentβ large as compared with the face wear.
