Popis: Documenting changes in hormone concentrations that accompany hemodynamic fluctuations during cardiac surgery and cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) has been an important goal of investigators. For, although a causal relationship may not be proven, methods of modifying the associated hormonal changes may lead to improved perioperative hemodynamic control and, thereby, to better patient outcome. Alterations in the endocrine system associated with cardiac surgery and CPB have been evaluated in various ways by numerous investigators. Wide variations in reported plasma hormone and metabolite values are likely due to the multiplicity of interactive and interdependent factors impacting the physiologic response to stress. Some of the factors that make comparisons of patients and study results difficult are outlined in Table 9.1.
