Popis: In this chapter we move to an analysis of the public sphere and examine the formal organization of Italian Judaism, which was not addressed by consolidating legislation until 1930. Subject to varying legal regimes, Italian Jewish communities struggled to find ways of working together that would enable them to support each other in ‘making Italian Jews’. Jewish community leaders were faced with the growing independence and freedom of individual members, who through emancipation had been allowed to detach themselves from the collective features of Jewish life. In this context, one of the most sensitive issues was the relationship between religious and civil laws; this chapter gives particular attention to marriage and divorce, which had been reformulated by the new Civil Code of 1865.
