This study extracts from the OntoNotes corpus passages marked by connectives of three discourse relations (Occasion, Contrast, Result) and integrates them into psycholinguistic experiments as stimuli to elicit continuations. For instance, a corpus passage like “David left the food with the man who kept supplies. Then he ran to the place where the Israelite soldiers were and asked about his brothers.” will be truncated right after the connective “Then”. Participants will need to complete the passage “David left the food with the man who kept supplies. Then …” or “David left the food with the man who kept supplies. Then he…”. The latter is prompted with an ambiguous pronoun. The objective of this study is two-folded. On one hand, we intend to quantitatively compare three proposed models for pronouns (Bayesian model, Mirror model, and Expectancy model). On the other hand, it allows us to empirically test how discourse relations (signalled by connectives) influence expectations about upcoming information. Novelties in comparison to previous related work: use more naturalistic language from corpora as stimuli and not limited to specific verb types. By Xixian Liao, Laia Mayol and Hannah Rohde |
