Inspired by the method of transformation optics, a flat light-weight Luneburg lens antenna for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) application is presented. The designed antenna is constructed by the gradient index metamaterials implemented on several thin stacked PCB layers with specific index distribution of polynomials. Due to the non-resonant properties of the unit cells, the designed antenna is able to achieve a wideband performance so as to improve the range resolution for a SAR image. In addition, the 3dB beamwidth of such antenna in E-plane reaches 19.8°, thus obtaining a fine azimuth resolution of 5.6 cm, To demonstrate its feasibility, the proposed antenna is applied to the self-developed indoor rail SAR system. |
