The grand finale is a 15-minute skit in which infection control practitioners dramatize potential infection hazards, portraying everything from a prominent country-western singer hospitalized for breast reductions who succumbs to urinary tract, IV-related, and wound infections to an extraterrestrial being admitted for plastic surgery on his face. Members of the audience are given paper on which to list infractions noted in each scene. At the end of the play these sheets are reviewed for accuracy by the moderator. Approximately 1,500 employees annually are educated and entertained during our hospital's Infection Control Month. One of the keys to the program's success is support from the administrators who share our vision of a comprehensive educational program that encourages ingenuity and creativity, instead of simply attempting to "meet a requirement." In these times of strict cost control, our administrators are farsighted enough to see that the money spent on education ultimately will yield cost savings in better infection prevention and control-and therefore shortened hospital stays.
