Popis: Chylous effusions are caused by the accumulation of chlye in the thoracic cavity (also known as chylothorax). Chyle is a protein—and calorie—rich fluid with nutritional and immunological functions. It is transported around the body via the lymphatic system, the largest component of which is the thoracic duct. Injury or disruption to the thoracic duct can occur due to trauma, surgery, congenital lymphatic malformations or acquired infiltrative conditions, leading to chylous effusions. As well as causing symptoms, notably breathlessness, chylous effusions can be associated with serious complications, including malnutrition, immunosuppression, and electrolyte disturbances. This article summarizes the potential causes, diagnostic approaches, complications and management options for chylous effusions in adults.
