In vitro fertilization (IVF) and pre-embryo replacement in the donor is one of several techniques now available or under consideration from a large therapeutic armamentarium for the treatment of the infertile couple. Other related techniques include (1) in vivo fertilization of oocytes obtained by superovulation, followed by pre-embryo transfer into synchronized recipients; (2) IVF followed by transfer of fresh or cryopreserved pre-embryos into another recipient (synchronization is necessary when a fresh pre-embryo is transferred); and (3) oocyte replacement into the uterine cavity, accompanied by previous or subsequent insemination (natural or artificial). |
