Popis: | The data of recent years on the relationship of structure and strength properties and also on structure changes in loading of sintered carbides have made more accurate and broadened our concepts on the deformation and failure mechanism of these materials. While not sufficient for formulation of a quantitative model of the structure and its relationship with strength properties, the data still make it possible to make reliable assumptions on the basic rules of behavior of the structure of sintered carbides in loading. 1. Contacting carbide grains and thin areas of cobalt phase make the primary contribution to elastic deformation of WC-Co. 2. Plastic deformation of WC grains occurs by slip and of cobalt phase by a fcc → compact hexagonal shift transformation. 3. Simultaneously with plastic deformation of one of the areas of the structure microcracks occur in other areas. 4. The reaction of individual carbide grains and groups of them to an external load, plastic deformation or the formation of microcracks, depends upon the method of loading the sample and the local plan of loading caused by interaction of structural elements in the given area. 5. Catastrophic failure of a sintered carbide sample starts with the formation of a crack of critical dimensions or with inclusion of a structural defect in the failure process. 6. The trajectory of failure occurs primarily in WC-WC intergranular boundaries and in areas of binder phase. |
