Popis: | Over the past few years, the drivers of economic growth have been the subject of extensive public and private debate and evaluation, both by academics and policy wonks. The decline of American competitiveness in major manufacturing sectors in the late 1970s and early 1980s brought the debate to the forefront in public policy. The "competitiveness" issue became a major focus of congressional initiatives in education and in research and development. At the same time, this issue pushed the private commercial sector—particularly in manufacturing and technology-intensive services products— to review factors that had contributed to their growth and profitability in the past and to evaluate how to redeploy those assets in a new, highly competitive global economy. The literature on competitiveness and economic growth grew exponentially, and the political ideology coalesced around what government's role in the stimulation of the economy should be.
