Technological limitations make it challenging to study the stereotypical perception of users of bionic prostheses. We are particularly interested in how this perception evolves with the degree of technization. To investigate this issue, we have developed a VR system that replaces the arm of test subjects with a virtual bionic prosthesis. The prosthesis can be controlled intuitively by gesture reconstruction without additional hardware (e.g., data gloves). The participant should thus be given a feeling of embodiment. From the perspective of computer graphics as a subfield of applied computer science, reality modification is a current research focus. Our system not only blends the prosthesis into the user's field of vision but also removes the user's arm from it. With this study, we also aim at understanding whether the quality of the technical implementation is suitable to create a reasonable degree of immersion. |
