Popis: | Lithothrix aspergillum, a coralline red alga, was studied from 1976 to 1980 in the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia, Canada. Cover of L. aspergillum, Sargassum muticum, and Neorhodomela larix was monitored in control quadrats and in sites scraped in May of 1976 and 1978. L. aspergillum maintained a significantly lower, and N. larix a significantly higher, cover in the scraped, as compared to control, quadrats over at least 4 years. S. muticum and N. larix produced gametes/spores seasonally, but no evidence of reproduction was found in L. aspergillum. These results differ markedly from the results of similar studies in California, but with different codominants. There colonization events documented in this study are similar to results seen higher in the intertidal zone, but where L. aspergillum is absent. |
