Popis: The multinational, multilingual character of the contending armies in the Peninsular War (1808–1814) turned translation into an indispensable written tool for verbal communication. Translations of the main European languages, namely Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, Italian, Prussian and Polish, apart from English were used in the Peninsula for a wide variety of purposes. Need arose in Britain for trustworthy native speakers of English with a good command of those languages. Drawing on a substantial body of archival sources, most of them unpublished and preserved in Britain, this chapter focuses on a number of ‘war translation’ issues, including the impact of the many Spanish documents translated into English for the British authorities and/or for the press, as illustrated by the use William Wordsworth made of them.
