Popis: A simple technique is presented to predict the materials degradation rate as a function of the applied cell voltage in a cathodically protected system. A number of alloys were studied in three chloride-containing solutions using a potentiodynamic polarization technique. The experimentally generated data were used with the model developed in this study to predict the extent of cathodic protection needed to prevent materials degradation. As compared to the simulated seawater, it was found that the cathodic protection of alloys is more difficult in the chloride-containing solutions from a coal preparation plant. The rates of degradation of materials in three different deaerated solutions were analyzed by computing their exchange current densities for hydrogen reduction and metal dissolution. It appears that the former exchange current density determines the corrosion properties of most alloys investigated.
