It is the intention of this chapter to describe and review critically some recent research concerning the psychological treatment of childhood asthma. Although it is well beyond the scope of this endeavor to discuss current notions regarding the pathophysiology of asthma, or to review exhaustively and critically the rapidly expanding experimental literature in the area of asthma research generally, some background orientation is necessary. In particular, before commencing the review an attempt will be made both to present an informal model concerning the psychological aspects of asthma, and to provide a brief summary of the current status of our knowledge in the latter area. |
