Popis: This chapter provides details about many of the language features and chemistry writing conventions highlighted throughout the book. Each Language Tip includes helpful hints for communicating effectively in writing. Tips for writing concisely, one of the hallmarks of writing in chemistry, are presented. Writing in chemistry requires that authors use vocabulary that is more formal and academic than they would use in speaking, thus word choice is addressed. Unlike chemistry-specific writing conventions, however, English grammar rules apply across the disciplines. The chapter covers parallelism, plural and singular scientific words, split infinitives, and subject–verb agreement. Correct punctuation also contributes substantially to writing clarity. The chapter also considers word usage, looking at 12 word pairs that are commonly confused by writers.
