This ongoing R&D work was an extension of the ongoing study on the development of anti-thermal shock whiteware ceramics bodies using prefired material as the main ingredient. The prefired material used was newly constructed mixture of selected mineral oxides. When fired at the peak temperature of 1300°C with 180 minutes soaking it exhibited a low CTE value of 4.4 x10-6 per oC and developed dense regions of sufficient size which were large enough to produce the aggregates. In this study, a whiteware ceramic body was formulated with 85 wt. % prefired material of two median sizes and plastic-bonded with 15 wt. % clay which comprised of equal proportion of a kaolin and ball clay. At the fired peak temperature of 1250 oC with 60 minutes soaking, the formulated body showed a low coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) value 3.5 x x10-6 per oC and considerable modulus rupture of ∼81 MPa, which are suitable for the development of anti-thermal shock whiteware particularly the ovenware bodies. The fired formulated body was also found to have less than 1% water absorption, significantly translucency and good whiteness as well as passed the quench test. |
