Effect of Jet Milling on HDH CP-Ti Powders: Microstructure and Properties

Popis: This study demonstrates the feasibility of jet milling to improve the particle sphericity of HDH commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) powders and enhance their flowability to make them more suitable for additive manufacturing and metal injection molding. Microstructural evolution in the powder surface was investigated in terms of oxide layer, composition, and phase transformation. Morphology, size distribution, and flowability of the Ti powders were improved, while the oxygen level increased due to the oxidation of the fresh powder surface after milling. Inter-particle and particle-to-chamber collisions during milling lead to intensive plastic deformation on the powder surfaces, concomitant with micro-defects and phase transformation of α-Ti → ω-Ti. This work is dedicated to revealing the fundamental effect of jet milling on Ti powders.
