Variations in cognitive functioning have been recorded throughout history, and attempts to measure these fluctuations have occurred for a least half of a millennium. Today, we conceptualize intellectual disability as deficits in intellectual and adaptive functioning occurring during the developmental period. Prevalence rates for this condition vary depending on economic status, living density, age at evaluation, and ethnicity, although one study in the United States estimated the rate was 13.0/1000 population (Van Naarden Braun et al., PLoS ONE 10:e0124120, 2015). Accurate measurement of intellectual disability criteria is important, and popular assessments that evaluate intelligence and adaptive behavior are presented. Given that intellectual disability is a vital component for discussions on dual disorders, considerations for how intellectual disability could impact the symptom presentation or evaluation of other psychological disorders are discussed. |
