This paper aimed to describe the potential and analysisof the development strategy of Mount Tumpa Great Forest Park, Manado, North Sulawesi in supporting the effort of biodiversity conservation of Wallacea sub-region and the vision of Manado city. Data collection was carried out through interviews, direct observation, and research references, then the observation data was processed using a SWOT (Strengths, Opportunities, Weaknesses, Threats)analysis. The survey result revealed some potentials value of Mount Tumpa Great Forest Park, included (i) the high potential of biodiversity of flora and fauna in the lowland to highland ecosystem of sub-regional Wallacea, (ii) the presence of invasive alien species and the dynamics of forest ecosystems, (iii) the potential of attractive natural landscape, (iv) the friendly local community culture, (v) easy access from the city centre, (vi) the existence of annual international events, (vii) the number of tourists and researchers of both foreign and domestic coming to Manado and the surrounding area, and (viii) the high physical and ecological functions to Manado city. Regional development strategy based on the SO, lead to aspects of ecotourism, conservation, research, and education. The ecotourism that can be formed was a tour package of conservation (in situ conservation of flora and fauna, diurnal and nocturnal wildlife observation, thematic gardens or agro-tourism, photography and hiking). Research and education were included of identification of vegetation, orchids, birds, environmental education, breeding, and animal behavior. This development needed an integrated partnership of each element based on the research results. A WO strategy was increasing the skills of local people to become a guide, provide the souvenirs (handicraft/ornamental plants), food, lodging which fuses with the local culture, as well as improved facilities and built a partnership with the competent conservation institution. |
