Hydro-Quebec's research institute (IREQ) has developed a tradition of power grid control research, which has begun at the early eighties. This paper provides the control-related activities in the transmission innovation portfolio. It includes a mix of developed technologies available from industrial partners and innovative products under development to enable a smarter transmission grid. The paper also describes a major smart transmission grid demonstration project which concerns a decentralized/hierarchical control of the dynamic shunt compensators already in the grid. This advanced wide-area scheme is built on a new type of PMUs. An overview of the strategic innovation portfolio is provided with emphasis on smart-grid related activities which include the development of a novel multi-agent simulator of power grid control when a broad range of smart-grid technologies is embedded. |
