Determination of the living area and activity of Bonelli's eagle in Sant Lloren del Munt i l'Obac nature reserve.- Bonellis eagle is a diurnal bird of prey and the populations have undergone a major decline in recent decades. In the seventies in Sant Lloren del Munt i lObac nature reserve there were four nesting pairs. Now, however, only one of the territories is occupied. The aims of the present study are to discover the living area, define the most widely used habitats and determine the rhythm of daily activity of the pair of eagles living in Sant Lloren del Munt i lObac nature reserve. To achieve those aims, the male of the pair of eagles living in the study area was radiomonitored over 56 days. The global living area of this specimen has been 11,593 ha (MPC). The living area described for the 99% kernel and the 90% Kernel have been 5,143 ha and 1,099 ha, respectively. The most frequented habitats are the Mediterranean thickets and the Aleppo pine woodlands. The rhythm of daily activity over the year follows a unimodal pattern in which the hours of most activity are the central hours of the day, between 12.00 and 14.00 solar. Although the pair of eagles studied have their nesting area inside the reserve, they mostly use the areas outside it to hunt, since they are the ones with the optimal habitats, such as the Mediterranean thickets, and their prey is more common there. It is also in those external areas, outside the reserve and relatively distant, where the eagles have roosts and spend long times, especially outside the breeding season. And so the establishment of conservation measures in those external areas of the reserve are indispensable for maintaining the species. |
