This chapter presents an overview of substance use–related disorders among the female population. It starts justifying the needs to study this specific group of individuals. It describes the diagnostic criteria and the prevalence of this problem in Brazil and in the world, which indicates an increased rate of these disorders among women. It also discusses the differences and similarities between women and men regarding genetics, drug use initiation, and the evolution of the disease, as well as detailing physical, psychic, and social complications. It emphasizes the nutritional aspects of this group and ends up pointing out prevention and treatment strategies that could be most effective for this particular population. |
