Popis: Sustainable buildings should include energy foundations that exchanges heat energy with the ground. High-rise buildings are often founded on piles because of the large mass of the high-rise building. The article presents the design of an economically efficient geothermal energy pile. Geothermal energy piles are typical geostructures used for heating/cooling buildings. Geothermal energy piles are exposed to cyclical thermal loads and not only to structural loads like conventional piles. These cyclical loads could increase the settlement of piles, especially if they are installed in fine-grained soil. Today, it is necessary to design geotechnical structures in such a way that they are economically efficient and have a low probability of failure. The proposed optimization method is illustrated by applying it to a multi-story building supported by geothermal energy piles. The example presented shows that the load-bearing capacity is fully exploited in the optimal design solution.
