The interatomic spacings at clean and oxidized (100 L) surfaces of polycrystalline iron samples have been investigated by the analysis of the extended appearance potential fine structure (EAPFS). The spectra have been obtained in the soft X-ray mode (SXAPS) using a very simple experimental arrangement. Although only a rather low intensity of the extended fine structure could be observed the data allowed a successful analysis which was performed in the standard EXAFS fashion. For the clean iron surface the first and the second shell of neighbours, although only 0.39 A apart, could be resolved. The results for angular momenta l = 0 and 1 of the final state agree within 0.05 A with crystallographic data. For the oxidized sample two peaks corresponding to Fe-O and Fe-Fe distances could be observed. Using the data for the clean surface as a “gauge” precise values within ±0.03 A could be obtained for the oxidized surface without any need for explicit calculations of the final state angular momentum. The results being 2.05 A for Fe-O spacings and 2.54 A for Fe-Fe spacings are in excellent agreement with crystallographic data of Fe2O3 and with those from other surface studies. |
