Popis: | Public awareness campaigns to achieve early diagnosis of bowel cancer can result in large numbers of people worrying, many of who see their GP unnecessarily—the ‘worried well’. This can lead to over-referral and investigation of patients in hospital, and the inappropriate use of scarce clinical and financial resources with little evidence of benefit to those with cancer. There is a sound evidence base for a simple self-assessment by people with symptoms to stratify their risk of having bowel cancer. However, it is difficult to provide this sort of complex information in a way that is easy to understand and at the right time. The authors feel that online decision support could be the answer. This article describes the development of the first online, professionally endorsed bowel symptom checker for people in the community. |
