Intravenous fluids extravasation represents a serious complication, especially when affecting neonates. Furthermore, its optimal management remains controversial and accounts for a major cause of morbidity in the pediatric population. We present a newborn boy with hypocalcemia who developed necrosis and loss of tissue on the dorsum of the right foot secondary to extravasation of intravenous calcium gluconate 10%. An excellent outcome was achieved with a conservative treatment. The incidence of necrosis due to calcium gluconate extravasation has diminished dramatically during the past years. Our case adds further support to a conservative approach of this infrequent complication. |
