Popis: | The objective of this article is to examine the use of scope conditions in the formulation and empirical test of hypotheses in the social sciences, particularly in small groups research. Ideas are illustrated with experimental workfrom expectation states theory, a comprehensive research program on how interaction inequalities in task groups are developed and maintained. This work provides a particularly apt illustration because expectation states researchers have made extensive use of scope conditions as a strategy in theory development and testing. In this article, I discuss the advantages of this strategy and examine two aspects of its use, namely, (a) the different ways in which scope conditions can be met by the provisions of research designs, and (b) the different techniques that can be used to check that a design has indeed been successful in this respect. The article also includes suggestionsfor improvements in these two areas. |
