Popis: | We describe the recent discovery by the Vela satellite system of short, extremely intense, bursts of gamma rays originating outside the solar system, and the subsequent confirmation by a number of other independent observers. The known properties of these so-called gamma-ray bursts will be given together with outlines of some of the more promising explanations produced so far. Essentially all these explanations invoke compact stellar objects - that is, dwarf stars, neutron stars or black holes. |
