The island of Asinara (51 sq. km) is situated 2 km north of the most north-westerly point of Sardinia (Capo del Falcone). A small island of approximately 1 sq. km, Isola Piana, forms a “land-bridge” between Capo del Falcone and the southern coast of Asinara (fig. 1). Vegetation is composed of low xerophile scrubs (annual rainfall is less than 500 mm) such as Tree Spurge (Euphorbia dendroides), lentisc (Pistacia lentiscus), Cist (Cistus Monspeliensis), Thymelaea hirsuta and the endemic Centaurea horrida. The highest vegetation in the gull colonies is made up of the Phoenician Juniper (Juniperus phoenicea), Malva silvestris/ Calycotome spinosa and Ferula communis. In the cliff colonies of Punta Tumbarino and Romasino, Sea Stock (Matthiola sinuata) dominates while wild leeks (Allium porrum), Sea Purslane (Obione portulacoides) and Glassworth (Salicornia fruticosa) cover the islets in Cala Scombro di Dentro. |
