Popis: At one time or another the bug to write an editorial strikes many in our profession. Our motivation is driven by disgust in what we see in the media, where many of the pundits are, for lack of a more nuanced description, idiots. However, we must admit that we are also motivated by the lure of celebrity. Viewing one's name in print in a format other than some stodgy academic journal, and having people say “I read your piece in the paper,” is an experience that strokes our PhD-animated egos. In this essay I will offer some explanations why we are often rejected by the New York Times , and based on my own learning journey, provide three suggestions to aspiring op-ed writers. You must write within the rules, write differently with due dispatch, and keep writing.
