Nine patients with either β-thalassaemia/haemoglobin E (7) or homozygous β-thalassaemia (2) not requiring regular transfusions were treated with the oral iron chelator, deferiprone 25–50 mg/kg/d for between 17 and 86 weeks (mean 49 weeks).
